Army Squash Individual Championships 2022

By March 15, 2022 No Comments

Over the period 8-10 March Army Squash hosted its premier event of the season in the form of the Army Squash Individual Championships. The format was ambitious with seven categories of both Cup and Plate competitions and the trial of a new digital tournament management system (SportyHQ).   Remote registration and payment for entries allowed over 93 players to enter a series of 245 matches over the three days.  The main event was the open and 79 Army Squash players competed in that category.  The absence of Maj Sam Miller due to his imminent retirement from the Army meant the title was up for grabs.

A closely contested final saw Tpr Paul Jones beat 2Lt Arthur May to become Army Squash Open Champion 2022.

In the Women’s Open WO2 Jenny Hitch beat rank LBdr Liz Griggs in the final.

In the age grouped categories the O35s saw Sgt Mark Thomas beat WO2 Kevin Stubbles, in the O40 WO1 Lee Burnie triumphed over Maj Chris O Brien and in the O45s Andy Scott beat Capt Bas dev Gurung.   The U25 event was won by Spr Mikal Quammie who beat Sig Ollie Coleman in the final and the novices event was won by Lt Tom Sweeney who defeated LCpl  Lalhruaisanga Vanchhawng.

Further awards went to Players Player Maj Nick Peck, Most Improved  Player WO2 Dale McCarter and best photo from Bardan Sunawar.    We now look forward to the final event of the Army Squash 2021/22 season which is the inter units in 17-19 May 22.
